WineQ, Category Killer?

December 13th, 2006 · Categories: Wine 2.0, Industry Trends

At the risk of being immodest, I’d like to point out something WineGuy said over on the Wine Marketer discussion forum:

I would have to say after looking at WineQ.com that they are potentially a category killer, i.e. wine clubs.

Cheers!

WineGuy

While we’re not trying to “kill” anything — certainly not wine clubs — we appreciate Chris’s observation because we are, indeed, trying to provide a service that is an improvement in every way on the old paradigm:

  • Instead of receiving selections from one winery, you can choose among many different wineries
  • Instead of someone else choosing your wines, you get to choose them yourself.
  • Instead of someone else deciding how often your shipments are sent (or how many bottles you are sent), you get to choose
  • Instead of paying a 20% to 30% markup for shipping, you get free shipping

As a friend said on the phone last night, “This is the perfect way to try new wines on a regular basis, for those of us who want to learn more about wine.”

So a hearty thanks to WineGuy Chris for seeing the paradigm shift, here, and saying so publicly. (Chris is retiring from the wine industry, by the way, and looking for someone to take over his empire. Contact him if you’re in the market to buy a well-respected bevy of wine web sites.)

Wine Marketer’s discussion forum is an excellent resource for learning how to market wine. Check it out if that’s up your alley.

Thanks for the acknowledgment Joshua.

This is a progressive movement for wine clubs and we wish you the best of luck as you continue on your adventure.

This is also a great way to introduce someone new to purchasing wine online!

Happy Holidays!

Not a category killer per se. There are (were!) two kinds of wine clubs:

1. The “aggregator” which built a set of selections for you and sent them to you, and hopefully you liked them. This is the kind of wine club that should feel threatened by WineQ.

2. The winery wine club, which by its nature can offer something beyond a subscription to receive wine - including discounts on wine, and invitations and admission to special events. This kind of wine club I think is not threatened by WineQ, because of the unique value-add that a winery can offer to its fans.

The new kind of wine club that WineQ offers (the personalized aggregator) is very exciting! Great start!
