From the Winery

Iberian varietals. California terroir. Incredible wines.

Barreto Cellars is a Central Coast Winery dedicated to producing premium-quality wines featuring grape varietals from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). Having relatives who migrated to America from these regions, we have a strong connection and desire to develop wines utilizing these varietals, a number of which are grown in small amounts in select vineyards throughout California.

The Mediterranean climate and soil is very similar to much of California, providing us with the opportunity to create new varietal wines and blends unfamiliar to many wine drinkers. Currently we are creating wines in the New World style, while trying to capture the truly unique characteristics each variety possesses.

Tasting Notes

This interpretation of the king of Spanish wines dares to break from tradition by capturing the upfront fruitiness of the variety and presenting it to the palate with a smooth, velvety texture that adds to its pleasant finish.

Color: Darker garnet/violet Nose: Some greenness here, indicative of not completely ripe fruit. Then some raspberry and cherry and some dried herbs. Palate: Somewhat thin and while somewhat balanced as well, the greenness from the nose is here as well, along with drying tannins and some rusticity. Finishes short. I like this wine, with its sweet fruit aromas and its cedar and spice top notes. The wine's flavors are jammy, with a depth to the berry-bowl flavors, and a bit of a tannic grip towards the finish. I would recommend drinking this wine with food--a stew, braised short ribs, a steak--and letting it breathe for about 30 minutes which brings out the complexity of the wine. Very good value for the price.
