From the Winery

Iberian varietals. California terroir. Incredible wines.

Barreto Cellars is a Central Coast Winery dedicated to producing premium-quality wines featuring grape varietals from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). Having relatives who migrated to America from these regions, we have a strong connection and desire to develop wines utilizing these varietals, a number of which are grown in small amounts in select vineyards throughout California.

The Mediterranean climate and soil is very similar to much of California, providing us with the opportunity to create new varietal wines and blends unfamiliar to many wine drinkers. Currently we are creating wines in the New World style, while trying to capture the truly unique characteristics each variety possesses.

Tasting Notes

Touriga Nacional is one of the main grape varieties used in the production of Port wines. Its use as a table wine is just now making it to the mainstream. This example makes a bold statement by exhibiting fruit, floral and spicy aromas while at the same time, possessing plenty of body and balance that lead to a smooth and lingering finish.

Color: Inky dark, with black/garnet edges Nose: Big oak here with tons of charred black fruit and dried rosemary, basil and thyme. Palate: Full and bitter in the back from the tannins, but good darkest fruit and tremendous power, including that charred earth and fruit finish. Seems still unintegrated, however, with that big oak and might actually need even more time? I agree with Dr. Debs' prognosis: this wine expresses a rich berry aroma clothed in your favorite old leather jacket, and displays lovely cherry fruit, a pleasing earthiness, and pencil shavings. Best wine I've ever tried from Lodi. (So far.) I want a case of this Barreto! OK, OK, make that two cases.

I LOVE THIS WINE. Stick your nose in the glass, and you can smell every garden in Portugal as it is full of flowers and spice. On the palate, the flavors are a berry-patch of brambly fruit with a juicy and spicy finish that keeps drawing you in for more. If you've never had a Portuguese table wine, this is a great wine to try instead. It would be excellent with grilled meats, bbq, and even roasted chicken.
