From the Winery

We are dedicated to producing hand-crafted Spanish varietal wines that exhibit the true character of the grape. Our family ties to Catalonia, Spain are the inspiration behind our pursuit of growing Iberian grape varieties in California. Our goal is to have Spanish varieties such as Albariño, Graciano, Tempranillo and Garnacha roll off the wine lover’s tongue just as easily as other Spanish words embedded in our culture.

All of our grapes are estate grown and farmed with a conscientious outlook toward sustainability and organics while being irrigated by solar energy. Our vineyards are farmed sustainably, utilizing low chemical inputs and high biological diversity. The wines of Bokisch Vineyards are certified by “The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing Practices” program, which requires third-party certification and a yearly auditing process of vineyard practices conducted by the non-profit organization Protected Harvest. Caring for our environment has always been one of the highest priorities at Bokisch.

Tasting Notes

Our Garnacha is reminiscent of the dense, spicy, Spanish red wines produced from this variety in its area of origin – Aragon. Due to minimal irrigation and severe pruning, its smaller berries and higher skin-to-juice ratio give it a deep color showing bright red hues with a tinge of blue. Subtle notes of pomegranate and cassis reveal themselves along with a slightly floral quality in the nose. Complex layers of strawberry and bright fruit combine in the palate for a delicious, lengthy finish. A medium-bodied wine, this Garnacha shows excellent balance, fresh acidity and bright flavors.

About Garnacha:

Garnacha, known as Grenache in France, originated from Aragon, Spain. From there, it moved along the medieval highway of the Ebro River, spreading eastward, and finally north of the Pyrenees Mountains. It reached Languedoc in the 18th century and the Rhone River Valley in the 19th century. It is an early budding vine that builds up concentration slowly as it languishes in the long summer days of the Clements Hills. It is one of the most drinkable varieties throughout the Mediterranean and California.

Color: Very light burgundy Nose: Green and vegetal at first, but quickly blows off after decanting. Then some very Pinot-style tart cherry and cranberry with some underlying pomegranate. Also has some big black pepper, rosemary and spice. Palate: Very similar in all categories to a high-acid, Old World Pinot, this has a very spicy and peppery palate with the bright red fruit from the nose. The rosemary comes back in at the finish, as well as some of the vegetal notes, finishing with some slight oak and a little hot. Good, though.
