From the Winery

We make a lot of Pinot Noir. Not a lot from any one vineyard but many small batches from many vineyards. Besides making wine for ourselves, we make wine for other wineries. This gives us an opportunity to collaborate with other winemakers and to make wine from many different sources. We experiment every year with new techniques and refine the old ones. Pinot reflects every move, every change, more than any other varietal. We take what we learn making better Pinots and use it on the other varietals and blends.

All the trials, all the variations in technique, all the study and practice show in this Jemrose Pinot. It is a state of the art, cutting edge California Pinot Noir. This wine is drinking superbly now and will profit from three or four years in the bottle.

Bennett Valley is one of Northern California’s newest appellations, and deservedly so. Previously part of the Sonoma Valley Appellation, the Bennett Valley is truly a unique terrior. Bennett Valley is a bit cooler than the Sonoma Valley. The Jemrose Vineyard Pinot Noir grows in a small 3-acre portion of the vineyard that is in the lowest corner of the valley, at the foothills of Sonoma Mountain. This unique place is perfect for this delicate Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes

The 2003 Jemrose Pinot Noir is a bit more aromatic, more fruit forward and a bit heavier than the 01 or 02 vintages. It's an evolutionary change that reflects the changing balance in California Pinots from the Burgundian style to the more fruit centric California style.

The 2003 Jemrose is very aromatic, with pronounced floral aromas. It is full and round on the palate, with forward fruit that is dominated by that haunting Pinot Noir flavor. We often pair it with grilled salmon and seared tuna. It goes equally well with chicken, steak and lamb. We've done Winemaker Dinners where the Jemrose Pinot was paired with a complex salad. Just use lemon juice in the dressing instead of vinegar, and the wine and salad will compliment each other beautifully!

Good cranberry color, that I can see my fingers through. the nose features lots of red berry, primarily strawberry, cherry. and cranberry, with hints of earthiness and cedar with plenty of pepper at the end. Taste follows through with those same chatracteristics. Dry with plenty of spice on a decent length finish. As it opens I get more of a cherry-cola push in the mid-pallate. Very well made with the type of elegance I look for in a Pinot Noir that so often seems to be missing.

If you love Pinots that are lush with fruit, this Deerfield Pinot from Sonoma County's largely unsung Bennett Valley will offer you intoxicatingly dense berry and rhubarb flavors with a touch of cigar and oak. While relatively high in alcohol at 14.4% ABV, you don't sense the alcohol by smell or taste, only in its moderately creamy mouthfeel and superb finish. I just added more of this beauty to my queue.

Rave reviews from children of all ages* at our Thanksgiving this year for this wine. It went particularly well with the gnocchi.

The nose is peppery. The wine itself is medium bodied, very well balanced with a plummy flavor. I'd enjoy it with pate, veal or Italian foods.

Very peppery nose and intense flavor for a pinot noir. A dry light to medium bodied wine with a pleasing tart fruit flavor. Would pair well with many foods.
