Esca 2004 Sonoma County Zinfandel
From the Winery
The 2004 Esca Zinfandel was made from 100% Sonoma County grapes grown in the Dry Creek AVA. The wine was aged for 18 months in 50% French and 50% American oak barrels and was bottled in April 2006.
Esca means "allurement or "bait" in Italian. Just as the nectar of the Hibiscus flower attracts the bee on the label, these wines entice the enophile.
Tasting Notes
The Esca Zinfandel is a blockbuster of wild berry, boysenberry and spicy aromas. This intense and alluring wine is bright and balanced and pairs well with food.

We saved this wine for a special Christmas Eve dinner and were glad we did. I was preparing flash fried venison steaks and this wine was an excellent match. Dark garnett colored in the glass, the dark berry fruit is prevelant on the nose. On first taste, you know you are drinking a zin, as this warmed you all the way down, helped by the 14.5% alcohol content. I tasted a lot of black raspberry, a touch of black cherry, and plum. There may have been a hint of dark chocolate as well but that might have just been wishful thinking on my part. The tannins were restrained, but they were there. The familiar spice of black pepper was on the finish. It held up very well to the heartiness of the venison steaks. Perfect for a cold Wisconsin winter night.
