Vineyard Notes:

Grown at Argyle Vineyards in the sandy clay loam foothills of Monterey County's ninth and newest appellation, the San Antonio Valley, our vines see summer daytime temperatures 10-20 degrees warmer than much of Monterey County, with a cooling nighttime influence, and a little morning fog coming over the Santa Lucia range from the Pacific Ocean, just 15-20 miles away. This gives us a daily heat cycle of 50 degrees, producing the exceptional fruit that is hand harvested for our limited edition award winning wines.

Tasting Notes

A great example of this late ripening grape variety, our 2004 pure varietal Petit Verdot is dark ruby red in the glass, with a lovely open fragrance of red berries and coffee. The palate is soft and full with a complexity of mixed berries, spice and hints of mocha.

The Wooden Guys applaud a lovely bottle of wine. The only regret is that they don't have more. Fortunately, the Little Wooden Guy gets his allowance soon and is going to buy more. Night One The color is deep maroon, not quite opaque. The nose is absolutely delicious, with dark chocolate/espresso mocha, and plump juicy blackberries and blueberries. The mouth feel is silky. Tannins are sweet and very smooth, but firm, indicating plenty of cellar life is still in the bottle. Chocolate, coffee, and gobs of fruit, just big splatting juicy gobs of fruit, open the palate. Not, mind you, oak and vanilla over-worked fruit, but pure believable fruit. Some red fruit, some tart cherries and maybe half a raspberry, appear in the mid-palate. A hint of vanilla rounds out the fruit on the finish, but never overpowers. The finish is long. This is good stuff. I can't promise there will be much left for Night Two, but I will try. Night Two There is still some mocha, but the nose is lighter on Night Two. It also adds some hazelnut. Lovely. It is still very silky, tannins are sweet, smooth and firm. Mocha, black fruit and blue fruit, plus the hazelnut from the nose on the mid-palate, are later joined by some maple syrup, but not overpowering, balanced. Finish is sweet and long. This is good. I am going to buy more.

Color: darkest ruby, deep core Nose: Deep and rich fruit and more savory aromas of marzipan, mocha, mint, menthol and dark black fruit flavors with anise and black cherry. Very good! Palate: Very smooth structure with round grip and great acidity. Fruit flavors from the nose, but then the more savory comes in during the long finish that ends with some great fresh herbs and rosemary. Lovely. Like the other reviewers said, there's wonderful aromas of coffee and mocha in the glass along with berries. Lots of blueberries on the palate mixed with the coffee aspect and some cranberries in there, too. There was also a nice meat juice-type finish. You may think this sounds weird but I was thinking this is the perfect wine to pair with Oreo Cookies! Although I didn't try this since I don't have any Oreos in the house, I can just imagine the character of the wine as a great complement to the crunch of the wafers and sweetness of the creme filling. This wine is well worth purchasing!

What the heck is Petit Verdot? I asked myself this very question when I first saw this wine, and a quick Google search revealed that it's most commonly used to blend with other wines! But then the "Double Gold, Best of Class" caught my eye... Color me intrigued. So I indulged my curiosity with this fancy new varietal, and I must confess that a more fascinatingly unique and complex wine has not touched my lips in eons! This symphony of mochaccino and lush berry, with that smoky-spicy finish, makes me feel a deep remorse for my varietal prejudice. I am a changed man -- Thank you, Escafeld!

This is an outstanding red from Escafeld, at a budget-friendly price that belies its richness and complexity. Wonderful full aromas of coffee and chocolate make the initial impression, followed by blackberries and huckleberries. More mocha notes on the long finish.

Cherry and chocolate nose with a matching body that adds some spice flavors to the mix. Very smooth wine with good balance and a nice long finish that hints at coffee flavors.

Stunning. If there is a wine on this site to buy its this one. From its beautiful, purple ink color to its sweet cherry blossom nose this wine screams winner. Nice plum flavor that is not over powering and a perfect balance to this wine (not too acidic, not too sweet). The wonderful cinnamon and smoke finish just tops the whole experience off perfectly. This wine has become my Friday Night after work tradition! Highly recommend!
