From the Winery

Jeriko Estate produces hand-crafted artisan wines from 100% organically grown and certified grapes from our vineyard in beautiful southern Mendocino county - which means no chemically synthesized fertilizers or pesticides!

Established in 1997, our vintner Danny Fetzer brought modern agricultural techniques and family winemaking heritage to Jeriko Estate to create stunning wines that showcase the terroir and quality of the fruit grown on the Estate.

Today, Jeriko is proud to be a family-owned boutique winery that creates award-winning wines of exceptional quality. Practicing a tread-gently-upon-the-earth philosophy, we use the latest in winegrowing technology while respecting ancient agricultural practices.

Tasting Notes

Winemaker's Notes:
This is what Jeriko Estate is known for - lots of juicy berry fruit and well balanced tannins. This lavishly oaked varietal marries lots of juicy blackberry fruit with peppery spice, suggestions of bacon and accents of both chocolate and coffee.

Aromas:
A deep woodsy nose with accents of coffee & black cherry.

Flavors:
Juicy red fruits give way to dried apricot, raisin & star anise with spicy touches of cocoa, white pepper & mole.

Finish:
A lightly toasted finish with smooth tannins & ripe fruit.

Pair With:
Serve with bacon wrapped beef tenderloin, brown mole sauce, black bean enchiladas, dark organic chocolate or with Cheesecake Momma's Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake.

On the nose I found aromas of boysenberries, chocolate plums (and yes, I mean that as one entry), blackberries, spice, leather, earth, vanilla, black cherry, and charred meat (As I write some of these descriptors, I realize that some of them might turn people off from the wine. However, I swear to you that charred meat or grilled meat, or meat in general as an aroma in a Syrah is not uncommon or unwelcome!). The nose showed as quite fruity and perfumed.

In the mouth I got flavors of espresso, black cherry, blackberries, raisins, licorice, raspberries, and plums. The flavors were very fruity. I found the finish to be fairly tannic, so I would say this one has quite a few years left in it to develop. Overall, I loved this bottle of wine. It had so many complex flavors and just got better over the course of the evening. I can easily recommend this bottle!

"...chickens, goats, and sheep roaming Jeriko's vineyards and hillsides." Sounds like a happy place to me. And it made for a happy wine. When I first opened it, I found raspberry, tar, cherry, and red licorice on the nose. The palate was spicy and full-bodied with another dose of raspberry, bing cherry, black pepper, cedar, and a little graphite. When I came back to it the next night (sadly, with just a plate of veggies, though I did use a spicy Spanish tapas sauce that did complement the wine), I found more cherry and cedar, but this time there was a hint of violets and sandalwood incense. I preferred the more vibrant first tasting, even though it was softer the second time around, so I wouldn't age this one terribly long myself. But you might find differently.
