From the Winery

Kendric Vineyards is a vigneron's operation, making wine from the ground up. We've tended our wines through every stage of their development, from site selection, to planting, to farming the vineyards, to making the wine. We are based in Marin, but have roots (viticulturally and otherwise) in Amador County in the Sierra foothills. We produce Pinot Noir from the maritime climate and shale/sandstone soils of Marin and Syrah from the continental climate and granitic/volcanic soils of the Shenandoah Valley.

Tasting Notes

Boysenberry and mocha aromas are first out of the glass. With time, more subtle sage, tarragon and anise aromatics emerge. The palate is smooth with supple tannins. It builds from a cool wet stone entry to a meatier midpalate, picks up black tar/licorice elements toward the end and finishes on a lingering custard note. Throughout, the wine carries an undertone of the granite in which it is grown. This wine has been purposely bottled without a foil capsule.

Very ruby colored in the glass with a medium weight. Lots of fruit on the front of the nose, foloowed by some vanilla and oak. Very new world style. Plum, raspberry, and black cherry also come through. Pallatte has more of a licorice quality, hint of raisen and dark fruit, with a bit of slim jim on the finish. The finish isn't very long, and it kind of falls apart on the end, lacking complexity. Mothfeel is a bit thin also. It's tasty enough, but it just kind of leaves you wishing there was a bit more to it then what's there.. I gave it 3.75.

What a gorgeous, excellent QPR wine. It was true garnet in color, like my grandmother's garnet ring, and it turned a bit purplish towards the rims. When I pulled the cork and poured the first glass, I was bowled over by spicy aromas and a bit of plum and cherry fruit. As the wine opened up you could also smell black tar. The flavors reminded me of macerated plums that had been sitting on a warm countertop all day, and there were also spicy flavors of allspice, clove, and nutmeg. The spices turned more herbal and lively as the wine rolled over your tongue, and I thought I tasted sage and eucalyptus. The long, silky aftertaste picks up a stony note and wraps around and picks up the tarry smell that you get on first sniff. Despite its color, the overall impression of this wine is black rather than blue or red, and its richness and acidity are in perfect balance. We had it with a delicious vegetable chili and garlic rice, and the wine neither overwhelmed nor was overwhelmed by the strong flavors of the dish. Instead the sweet fruit and the spices matched the tomatoes, vegetables, and chili flavors note by note.
