Lava Cap 2003 American River Red
Tasting Notes
This stellar proprietary wine is made mainly from grapes grown in our mountain vineyards near the historic American River. This wine is a wonderful field blend (blended and aged in the barrel as opposed to blending after aging)of mostly Bordeaux varieties, plus a little bit of Zinfandel and Syrah. Its full body, gentle texture and bright fruit flavors should reward the drinker for the coming five to seven years. For everyday wine enjoyment at an affordable price, we highly recommend that you give this one a try!

On the nose I found oak, spice, cedar, blackberries, and dark fruit. In the mouth there were black fruits, black currants, and a slight hint of blackberry. The wine was spicy and had an alcohol kick, but was great after it aired a bit.
My overall impressions were "woah" and this still needs a bit of time or to be decanted for a while before serving. We drank this on its own, but I would suggest serving it with pasta or meatloaf!

Man, this is a full-bodied wine! Lots of heavy aromas and cedary spice, with dark fruit flavors that pop. This is a lean, intense red blend, and even though it's a bargain, it will probably age well too. I'd let this breath a little next time and serve it up with a juicy, pepper rubbed steak and a twice-baked potato.

Quick-flavored intensity from start to finish. An opening breath of alcohol, almost electrifying. A dryness and swift infusion of some un-placeable fruit follows immediately. Lingering throat tingles, spiciness on the tongue. A tease, a flirt, a slap in the face.

This one is too dry for my tastes, but it does have a beautiful color and fruity aromas, like fresh fruit from the produce aisle. Maybe even Red Delicious apples?! Too dry and intense for me personally, but I'd definitely drink it if there was nothing else in the house.

This feisty red envelopes you, like Vesuvius to the Pompeiians. It grips you tightly with intense fruit and cedar flavors. You are quickly released to a smooth, dry finish.
