Lava Cap 2005 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc
Tasting Notes
The 2005 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc is a delightfully flavorful and complex wine that pairs perfectly with seafood and poultry. It possesses a complex nose redolent of cantaloupe, cream, lime, tangerine, vanilla and oak. A long refreshing finish complements the viscous, full-bodied mouthfeel. We blended in 2% Semillon from the Granite Hills Vineyard to maximize complexity and enhance that full-bodied texture.

C: Yellow
N: Pear, pineapple, honeysuckle slight toast.
P: Big juicy pear up front, then some peach and pineapple. Cali style, with subtle acid and dominant tropical fruit. Some cream and toast in the finish.

Lava Cap brings the heat...

This is a very pretty wine with a golden straw color, much darker and richer looking than typical Sauvignon Blanc. The nose was a little tight. I got some lemon zest, a bit of citrus, maybe a hint of apricots. The flavor was much the same, but a bit of creamy oak mixed in. However, the alcohol content just completely overwhelmed the finished, leaving me with nothing but heat. This is the second wine I've tried from Lava Cap and my review of the merlot is pretty much the same. I don't mind high alcohol at all, in fact a particular zin that comes in at 15.7% is one of my favorite wines right now, but this is just excessive and it kills whatever enjoyment I might have found in this wine. I would give this wine a 2.75.

In the glass this Sauvignon Blanc was straw gold in color, it really struck me as a pretty wine. The nose came wafting out of the glass with vanilla, lime and orange citrus flavors. A very aromatic wine overall. In the mouth I would describe the wine as creamy. I got flavors of lime, melon, oak and clementines in the mouth.
The oak aging really lent a different characteristic to this wine, much different from most of the Sauvignon Blancs that I drink, so I had to adjust my expectations to appreciate this wine for what it was: a very well-balanced, inexpensive, aromatic and flavorful white, with good citrus and melon flavors tempered by the oak aging. I think it would do wonderfully with an herb-roasted chicken dish, though it was great on its own as we drank it.

I put my ear to the glass, half-expecting to hear it sing an aria of flavorful sunshine with a canteloupe crescendo. The initial waft of languous aroma foretells just this type of synesthetic reinforcement. But, though it remained mute, its impression was just as vocal once swallowed. Good taste, better smell.

Tropical fruits, maybe apricots and just a little melon? The aromas are fresh and creamy, probably from the Semillon blended in and the oak aging. I wish it lingered a bit longer though, but I really love the lime and vanilla.
