From the Winery

The West Vineyard is an 80-year-old dry-farmed, head trained Zinfandel vineyard that is the source for our Tradizionale Zinfandel. I worked with the grower Tom West on a more recent planting in the vineyard that has become the source of our Petite Sirah, as well as some younger vine Zinfandel for our Dry Creek blend. The West Vineyard sits a little above the valley floor on the benchland of Dry Creek Valley. The soil at the West Vineyard has a larger percentage of clay and gravel resulting in lower yields of intensely flavored and balanced fruit. --Fred Peterson

Tasting Notes

Our '02 Petite Sirah hits the ground running with robust aromas and flavors that punch on through to the finish. The deep inky color lures you in and the aromas -- brambly and spicy, with herbal notes and rustic earthy essence -- lead you on. The rich berry and vanilla flavors are framed in a balanced yet powerful structure of tannin, oak and acid. The midpalate reveals coffee and blackberry followed by a long mocha and fruit-driven finish. This rough-hewn wine deserves a hearty meal or cheese course to show its true merits.

Deep ruby, aromatic, medium heavy body. Medium tannins. Moderate intensity -- can handle stronger flavored foods and cheeses. Long finish.

A ruby-colored red with a medium heavy body. Low tannins with a rich luscious texture, the wine exhibited a dry finish. Very pleasant wine, ready now.

Aroma is sweet, with tones of berries and spice. Taste is dry and fruity at the same time. This is a great wine for cream-based pasta or lamb dishes.

Exquisite color! Intriguing noses that makes you want to explore this type of grape even further. Finish reminded me of coffee.

The full-bodied higher-end cousin to Peterson's excellent Zero Manipulation. I typically have a hard time with full-bodied reds, but this one's flavor "popped" enough that it was hard to put down my glass for good. And anything that makes me think of the Zero...
