From the Winery

Tanner Vineyard lies on a rocky, south facing slope in the Sierra foothills, in Calaveras County near Murphys. The grapes were crushed and fermented in small lots to preserve the varietal flavors.

The vineyard is situated at 2000 feet elevation in the Sierra foothills. The rocky, south facing slope has great drainage and long sun exposure. Hot days and cool nights make for the ideal climate and soil conditions for the Syrah grape.

Growers Dick and Ron Tanner and their families tend their vineyard and know each micro-climate intimately.

Tasting Notes

The 2004 Syrah treats you to a bouquet of flavors - ripe, black fruit and underlying spices. There's a hint of mint in the nose and again in the finish. All of this is supported by a solid, mature tannin structure. The result is a mellow blend with a touch of velvet.

Color: Medium dark purple with violet edges Nose: Chocolate, blackberry and chalky blueberry Palate: Similar to the nose, but with more chocolate, enough that it seems like it has some residual sugar on it. The fruit is pure, however, with black and blue like the nose. Medium-bodied, a lighter style of Syrah, with light tannins. Finishes with more coco and pie crust. Note: I got this wine after it had been open all day, so it had a good airing out. When I tasted it, I found rich smoke aromas, and smokey meat flavors with juicy red & blue fruit showing through. This rich syrah is great for winter evenings in front of the fire, with some figs & procuitto.

Give it an hour, but don't overlook it

Before you serve your Poached Beef Tenderloin, decant this young wine and enjoy its deep violet color, but let this wine breathe for a good 60 minutes. Then, revel in its black cherry and vanilla aromas, then its raspberry, white pepper flavors, which even include a hint of figs and chocolate. You'll find it refreshing, with fine balance, light to moderate texture, and a moderate finish.
