From the Winery

While there are many in the wine industry that would have you attaining your doctorate in order to properly match foods and wine, we here at the Twisted Oak Institute couldn't care less what you pair this Petite Sirah with. In fact, throw out the rules! Live a little! Get crazy! Pour it on your corn flakes, drink it with applesauce, wash down a tuna on rye, try it without pants! We don't care!

Tasting Notes

Aromas of your rich uncle's old cedar cigar box blend smoothly into plum and blueberry explosions. When the fruit bombing stops you are left with a creamy smooth sensation of vanilla and cream. It's like Grandma's egg nog, Christmas Eve: nutmeg, cloves, allspice. There are some pert and supple tannins you'll definitely want to hang with and let soften in the glass. A wine that leaves you smiling seductively, on the inside...

Food Pairings: Steaks! Other grilled meats (like, say, grilled SPAM). PB&Js (oddly enough). Corn flakes.

I may be a bit biased as Petite Sirah is one of my absolute favorite wines, but this was simply a delicious bottle of wine, I highly recommend it, and I would love to see how this bottle develops in the next 2-5 years.

The nose was very aromatic with blueberries, oak, vanilla and cloves as the most prevalent aromas. However, it kept developing as it sat out (and you should let it sit out a bit to aerate before you drink it as it appears to be a really complex wine, in both the mouth and the nose) and I eventually could distinguish nutmeg, allspice and chocolate. In the mouth there were gobs of fresh dark berries, mostly blueberries, though a bit of blackberry with plums as well. The allspice and cloves showed under the fruit and after an hour I found vanilla cream and velvety chocolate.

Overall my impressions of the wine were that it was a dark, juicy wine that stained my lips purple! It needs time to open up, but you will be glad you were patient as the flavors keep appearing and showing a very complex and well-made wine. And it even goes well with Doritos and cheeseburgers!

Vibrant, deep purple color with an oak and vanilla nose (I could swear there was some crisp morning bacon smell in there too...very complex). This is a full bodied red with a rich chocolate plum flavor with a medium length licorice finish. Definitely recommend!

Refreshing like an alcoholic soda, complete with fruit blast and fizzle down the gullet. But after a few tastings, this tinglingly welcome liquid has to prove its merit against a flushing dryness that drains the moisture from inside the mouth like a masticular sandstorm. And overall, it succeeds in doing so.

When this wine hit my glass, I knew the inky color was going to produce some dark ripe berry flavors. A subtle blueberry is there, nicely accompanied by vanilla, cedar and spice. It's fruit forward with a softer acidity, but still dries out the tip of my tongue and keeps me going back for another sip. I do wish it was a wee bit rounder, but I definitely appreciate the hint of creaminess there at the end.

Intensely chocolatey and popping with hints of dark berries. I can see this wine as the perfect companion to a rich Camembert.

This is a fun-drinkin' wine, and quite mysterious. I drank it by itself and it was such a pleasure, but it had me itchin' for a big ole juicy steak, like the tasting notes recommend (Tofu steak, of course, for all those vegetarians reading this). It's bold, yet beautiful, with its lush fruit that melts away into a soft spiciness. Is that pumpkin pie with whipped cream that I taste? No, it's just the seductively creamy finish of nutmeg, cloves and allspice in this incredible Petit Sirah. Great work, El Jefe!
