From the Winery

The Tanner vineyard is located directly across the valley from our winery site off of Highway 4 in Vallecito, CA. Brothers Dick and Ron Tanner, along with their sister Judie Block and their families, are extremely committed to learning from their vineyard and tweaking wherever necessary each and every year. The result is a vineyard that gives us robust and rustic reds that age well and show intense fruit character when young. This Syrah has a great natural tannin structure that does not inhibit the darker ripe fruit characters.

Tasting Notes

The 2004 Tanner has the classic heavy mettle of Calaveras Syrah that Led to us Going to California and making wine here. Heady aromas of raspberries, pepper, and leather are sure to leave you Dazed and Confused. We also expect you will have a Whole Lotta Love for the big strawberry, vanilla and rhubarb flavors. Chewy tannins Bring It On Home for a nice finish. We know we could Ramble On about this Heartbreaker of a wine, but we don't want to end up swinging from the Gallows Pole... (OK, sure, we wanted to work in Stairway to Heaven - but it got Trampled Under Foot.)

Food Pairings: Carnivores, you have a choice! Beef, pork, game - enjoy it with a whole cowl, leg of lamb or leg of SPAM - but not with Custard Pie...

Color: Deep purple Nose: A lot of vanilla, some garden herbs, then some rich but dusty blueberry with with some red fruit hinting underneath. Ends with some white pepper. Palate: Full and chewy, with vanilla and oak in the fore, then that blueberry starts rising to the surface in the front and the meaty mid-palate. Finishes with more oak and some red fruit that comes out in the long finish. Mmmm... Deep purple inkiness with black raspberry and cherry aromas that carry through to its taste. A little tight on tannin but smooth mouthfeel otherwise. Plum flavors also, plus a hint of mission figs, cloves, and a little Brett at first that gives way to a nice smokiness that had me reaching for another glassful.

Spice and herbs in the nose which is interesting because the taste is much milder than the aroma. Light bodied berry taste with a short but pleasant finish. I enjoyed this wine.

Deep purple color with a sweet floral and cherry aroma. The taste hits you with a combination of herbs and Coca cola. Nice full body wine without being a huge fruit bomb. Wood smoke finish. Solid and worth a taste if you're not looking for a CA fruit bomb!
