From the Winery

You knew it was coming. The %@#$! looked so %@#$!-ing good on the red wine bottles. So here we are skipping blindly across the overkill line and slapping a %@#$! on our white Rhone-style blend. You might be asking, "What the %@#$! are they thinking?" It's simple... In an era of "Reality TV" and "Shock Radio," one should never underestimate the power of a little punctuation.

Tasting Notes

These tasting notes are often based on the winemaker's notes. Well, this time he told me that this %@#$! had aromas of peaches and butter. Have you ever buttered a peach? Just weird if you ask me. Then he goes on to mention creamy flavors of pear and truffles. Okay, now we have peaches and butter and pears and mushrooms. Is this insane or what? Well, I can tell you that this %@#$! is a lot yummier than that, and has body and character almost like a red wine. And it will even lay down for a few years. How cool is that?

I tend to like California Roussanne because of the luscious mouthfeel and round fruit. The mouthfeel here didn't disappoint - the wine has a very heavy mouth-coating weight to it. It is also a lovely deep golden color. Unfortunately, the oak in this wine is unpleasantly overwhelming. Roussanne is already a wine with somewhat subtle fruit, but this has the fruit covered up completely by an overwhelming nose and taste of oak. Some may enjoy this style, but I found it very unbalanced and not a good representation of a grape I generally enjoy.

This is stimply stunning value for this outstanding Roussanne/Marsanne blend. The wine is a brilliant true gold in color, and has aromas of white peach and pear. This wine really shines in the flavors of peach, pear, and apple that combine with a really nice streak of minerality and earth. All this hangs on a well-structured framework where the acidity is in perfect balance with all those ripe, round flavors. Try to find a Hermitage from the Northern Rhone that delivers this quality at this price. I dare you. Have it with crab cakes and a salad with avocado--a beautiful pairing that matches the rich yet refreshing profile of this wine.

This wine is what I would call "seasonal". In the winter, I'd give this a 3.0. But, on a warm day if this wine was served chilled its easily a 4.0. Peach and honey on the nose with a straw yellow color this crisp wine has a green apple taste and a clean toasty finish is a GREAT summer wine.
