From the Winery

After its debut last year, we found that most people cut straight to the chase and called this Verdelho simply, "Bordello." While it is true that this sinfully delicious wine will make youwant to put on the red light... walk the streets for money... those days are over. You don't have to sell your body to the night. You don't have to wear that dress tonight!!

The Silvaspoons Vineyard is located Northeast of Galt in the newly recognized Alta Mesa district of the Lodi AVA. This Portuguese white grape is an early ripener with great natural acidity very reminiscent of a Sauvignon Blanc. The berries are light greenish to golden in color but the skins are quite thin, yielding a white grape juice that is almost pale straw in color.

Tasting Notes

"Mandrake? You listening? Purity of Essence. That's what this Verdelho has. You'll never catch a Commie drinking this Verdelho. Why, Mandrake? Because it's full of exotic aromas of bananas, citrus, lilac. And, it is bursting with crisp, fresh fruit flavors of apricots and honeydew melon. Mandrake, this is the purest expression of fruit from a vineyard as you will ever taste. Drink it now, like a man!"

Food Pairings: By itself! As an apertif. Or with most seafood, clam chowder, oysters and other aphrodisiacs...and creamed SPAM on toast!

This Verdelho from Twisted Oak had very nice aromas. Apricots made the first impression, followed by lime and citrus blossoms. Then came the tasting part. It was similar in the mouth, with traces of grapefruit and brown sugar. The aftertaste lingered a long time. Clean, crisp and fresh, this wine had excellent balance, a juicy mouthfeel, and was full of flavor. It was concentrated, but not at all heavy. This is a wine that doesn't get tiring at all.

I opened this bottle and served it with shrimp that I had sauteed in a citrus-rum-chile reduction sauce and cheese tortelinni with vodka cream sauce. We noticed plenty of light citrus and pear on the nose with a touch of apricot. In the mouth those citrus flavors really came through with a nice zinginess on the finish. I also detected a bit of pineapple as it opened up. It was perfect with the spiciness of the shrimp. I would have been happy to simply nibble the shrimp all night long and enjoy the wine and open a second bottle if I had one on hand. It was that good of a match. I could also see opening this up on a warm summer night while sitting out on the back deck with good friends and great conversation.

I have been meaning to try the wines from Twisted Oak for quite some time now, but let's face it, I'm a bit lazy and I can be forgetful...so I hadn't gotten around to it. But now I have and I can say for certain this will not be our last bottle of this one or from Twisted Oak in general...I have my eye on the Petite Sirah...

The nose of the Verdelho was very aromatic. It started out with a strong sense of pineapple giving away to apple. Flowers then dominated the nose. In the mouth there were pears, apples and peaches. The wine had excellent acidity and structure.

I served it with parmesean breadcrumb baked tilapia and leftover risotto. Some kind of vegetable too, though my memory is foggy...The light flower and crisp fruit flavors in the wine paired well with the light flaky fish and the acidity did well up against the creamy cheese risotto.

Overall, we loved this wine. The flavors and aromas were great for the summery weather we've been experiencing here and the value was excellent.

This wine delivers an intriguing combination of rounder apricot and peach aromas and flavors with a zingy acidity that is reminiscent of grapefruit and lemon peel. Ideal for chilling and serving outside in the warm summer months with grilled halibut or peel-and-eat shrimp. Great choice if you love sauvignon blanc, but would like to try something new.

This white has a fruity aroma and nice, light lemon/grapefruit taste with sort of grassy flavors coming in on the finish. Very nice (especially for a novice wine drinker!).

Straw yellow color with a floral, honeysuckle nose. Crisp grapefruit on the palette with a nice long floral finish as well. Nice wine!

Flowery and grass nose. Tastes of lemon, grapefruit and fresh cut grass. Nice, floral finish as well. Good everyday white!
