"Mandrake? You listening? Purity of Essence. That's what this Verdelho has. You'll never catch a Commie drinking this Verdelho. Why, Mandrake? jasmine • Apricot • grapefruit • clove spice • viognier
Tasting Notes
"It's like going into a department store, and before your can say 'Stop!' some perky thing in a floral print blasts you with the latest from Yves St. Ralph!" Not this Viognier! Sure, you will detect a hint of jasmine, but apricots and grapefruit take center stage upstairs in the Aroma Dept. Meanwhile, in the Flavor Dept. (1st floor, just past Lingerie), you'll taste those apricots and grapefruits along with a touch of clove spice. Perfect for your holiday, or everyday, shopping experience! Cedar • plum • Blueberry • vanilla • cream
Tasting Notes
Aromas of your rich uncle's old cedar cigar box blend smoothly into plum and blueberry explosions. When the fruit bombing stops you are left with a creamy smooth sensation of vanilla and cream. It's like Grandma's egg nog, Christmas Eve: nutmeg, cloves, allspice. There are some pert and supple tannins you'll definitely want to hang with and let soften in the glass. A wine that leaves you smiling seductively, on the inside...
Food Pairings: Steak and Eggs! Any grilled meat, even SPAM! Or bacon... mmmm, bacon..and of course french toast...and custard donuts...mmmm, donuts...

boysenberry • raspberry • meaty • leathery • Provençal herbs
Tasting Notes
The meaty and leathery characters and hints of Provençal herbs and spices might have you thinking this Rhône-style blend of Mourvedre, Syrah, and Grenache just fell out of a "California Cheese" commercial. Well, the name is the only cheesy thing about it! Those bright fruit flavors of boysenberry and raspberry sure ain't no bull! (Note: No animals were harmed in the writing of these tasting notes.)
Food Pairings: Pairs and rhymes with Duck! Also barbecued baby back ribs and Szechuan foods.
From the Winery
The 2005 edition of this tastelessly named red Rhône-style blend is the first vintage with grapes sourced almost entirely from Calaveras County. All of the vineyards were chosen for a particular attribute that makes those vineyards very special places. Most... »More

Peach • butter • pear • Truffles • white blend
Tasting Notes
These tasting notes are often based on the winemaker's notes. Well, this time he told me that this %@#$! had aromas of peaches and butter. Have you ever buttered a peach? Just weird if you ask me. Then he goes on to mention creamy flavors of pear and truffles. Okay, now we have peaches and butter and pears and mushrooms. Is this insane or what? Well, I can tell you that this %@#$! is a lot yummier than that, and has body and character almost like a red wine. And it will even lay down for a few years. How cool is that? Food Pairings: Just About Anything! Hearty salads, risottos, pork, Thai food, seared Ahi tuna...sweet and sour SPAM!

cherry • raspberry • clove • great structure • tempranillo
Tasting Notes
For several crushes, our buddy Scotty (not our winemaker, another Scott) helped us with punchdowns, pressings, rackings, and just about any other task you have during crush. You always knew Scotty was around because of the aroma of his clove cigarettes. You'll note that this Tempranillo also has a hint of clove, along with aromas and flavors of cherry and raspberry. Not to mention great structure and acidity, but I digress. Now Scotty works for another winery, but somehow the aroma of clove still wafts around the crush pad. Some suspect Scotty is stealing beer from the lab fridge, but it's probably just the Tempranillo. Food Pairings: Tapas! Spicy sausages and salamis, linguica, ham, game, pot roast and fried SPAM fingers.

raspberry • Pepper • Leather • strawberry • vanilla
Tasting Notes
The 2004 Tanner has the classic heavy mettle of Calaveras Syrah that Led to us Going to California and making wine here. Heady aromas of raspberries, pepper, and leather are sure to leave you Dazed and Confused. We also expect you will have a Whole Lotta Love for the big strawberry, vanilla and rhubarb flavors. Chewy tannins Bring It On Home for a nice finish. We know we could Ramble On about this Heartbreaker of a wine, but we don't want to end up swinging from the Gallows Pole... (OK, sure, we wanted to work in Stairway to Heaven - but it got Trampled Under Foot.) Food Pairings: Carnivores, you have a choice! Beef, pork, game - enjoy it with a whole cowl, leg of lamb... »More
